1. Purpose

Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com / gallery.sourceforge.net) is probably the best open source online image gallery to date. The purpose of this tutorial is to guide Gallery users through the procedure of converting and uploading mutliple pictures at once.

2. Why resize before upload?

Gallery automatically creates resized versions of uploaded pictures: a thumbnail (small version) of about 150 pixel width and, if needed, a standardized version of about 640 pixel width. If the uploaded image is greater than the default image size (in this case 640 pixel in width) it will save 3 versions of the image: the original, the standardized and the thumbnail. If it's smaller or has exactly the default width, Gallery will only create a thumbnail and has to store only 2 versions in all. As in most cases the quality of a 640x480 image is sufficient and the webspace is limited, we'll first resize the pictures offline with an image editing tool (IrfanView) and then upload images of standardized width.

Of course the dimensions of the thumbnail and the standardized picture can be set for each album independently.

4. Resize images with IrfanView

You only have to resize the images if they're greater than the default image size of your Gallery installation.

1. The easiest way is to put all images in a directory.

3. Select File -> Batch Conversion / Rename

4. Find the directory containing the images in the dialogue and push "Add all" / "Add" to add all images / the selected image to the batch conversion process.

5. Select an output directory.

6. Select the image format of the output images (select JPG for pictures and GIF for graphics like images).

7. Set the "Options" (quality (use 90-100),...).

8. Check "Use advanced options" and "Set advanced options" (image dimensions, BIT depth and other properties). Take a look at this screenshot, these are the settings I use: irfanview_advanced_options.gif

9. Start the batch process by pushing "Start".
